I did this using both Illustrator and Photoshop, since there are certain effects I couldn't achieve using Illustrator alone. Drew it completely on the computer, even found a way to make a good hair effect ^^
The skimpy clothing was partly inspired by some pictures of Aeon Flux
Rosa Kybert is a kaibab squirrel(the name has a 'y' in it because I forgot how to spell 'kaibab', and it kinda stuck), and I got the idea for her name by combining 'kaibab' and 'abert', two kinds of squirrels that eat nuts from the pondorosa pine tree, and giving her the name 'Rosa'. Like all kaibab and abert squirrels, she has tassel ears, though her fur is yellow, not black.
Note that I didn't use the dodge/burn effects to shade. Instead, I used some dark oranges and burgandys, as well as some muddy greens, and light colours, for shading and highlighting.
And making her original, non-shaded form was a BITCH!
good work on drawing it all on the comp i gave that up as soon as i got my scanner
god my internet is slow i read your whole thing and typed this and its still loading the pic
i love the leafs and how they are very transperant the hair looks good but could do with some darker tones i think
and bigger breasts XD
I may actually try some darker tones in the hair after this, 'cause even I am not quite satisfied with the tone. Also, the fur needs work, gotta give it less of a 'solid' look, but kinda fucked that up 'cause I added the leaves before doing the shading. Kinda clumsy on my part I think
As for the breasts... she's barely an adult according to the laws in Rodentia and Mustalidia, and she doesn't want to have a breast-enlargement, methinks. And I think her breasts are kinda average-size for someone of her proportions, though I may be mistaken
With drawing on the comp, you should try it again. I have a scanner too, but these days, I mostly just draw using the vector programs I have. I had to use paint programs to do all my drawing before I had a scanner, and I think I kinda got used to that.
Anyways, thank you for the critique, and please, feel free to critique my other works ^^

i was just joking bout the brests
im not to interested in going back to drawing on the comp you should check out my gallery and see why(im kinda a detail freak)

This looks very pretty. The colours and tones all work really nicely together.
Some of the anatomy could do with some improvement, as some of the proportions look a little unusual, and while you -could- call it STYLE, I don't think it works because it just looks unnatural. Firstly the neck is too thick. The head is too large [although you could get away with calling that style if you really want to] the hands are definitely too small and I think the lower legs are also much too thin in comparison to the thickness of the thighs. The stomach also looks too thin when compared to the shoulders and neck.
Don't worry, I'm not just going to list faults, but I'll tell you what I think could be done to fix them ;b
Firstly the neck - its not only too thin, but its too long. Try making it thinner and shorter. It might also help if you add some small lines around the neck to suggest the neck muscles and collar bone - if you look at yourself in the mirror you'll see your own neck muscles and collarbone show - more or less depending on the way you position your neck, so perhaps you could try using yourself as a reference next time. Drawing in the collarbone should also help to get the neck more accurately positioned, as you will have something more subtancial to build upon - you could always draw in the entire bone and then erase the parts of it that are not needed to be seen in the final image after you've added the neck and shoulders ;D
As for the shoulders, I think they are possibly too wide for her body - or it could be that her body is too thin for her shoulders. Either way, it looks inconsistant, and I think you simply need to decide on what kind of figure you want to portray - a slim person or a broad shouldered one. Most women tend to have slimmer shoulders, although that doesn't mean that ALL women have to, so its up to you really. But if you are going to give her broad shoulders, that suggests at a naturally robust figure, which would probably have a thicker waist and stomach rather than the slim stomach you've given her - not fat necessarily, but weightier in a healthy way if you like [with naturally larger bones and muscles etc.] do you see what I mean?
You've also given her large hips - this works well and makes her look nicely female, though again, remember to consider the size of her waist when doing the hips. A thin person would likely have thinner hips, whilst someone with wide hips would probably have a slightly weightier figure overall - the same as what I was saying about the shoulders really. Wide hips often mean larger/healthier internal reproductive organs [more space for a baby to grow!] so the belly might stick out a little more as well to accomodate this.
I'm not saying you have to change ALL her proportions by any means, but these are some suggestions and things that maybe you can think about and consider.
I also think the width of the lower leg needs to be closer to the width of the upper.
As for the hands, I'll tell you a general rule that I was told a long time ago and have always found helpful! Spread your hand out and hold it up to your face, and you will find that your hand roughly covers your face [or is perhaps slightly smaller if you are a smallish person] but now compare the size of Rosa's hands to her face. They're much, much smaller. While some people might say this is style, I've always found that whatever styles are applied to figures, this rule nearly ALWAYS works well. If you think about it, the hands and the face are the 2 most expressive parts of our bodies - both are used in communication, eating and drinking, and other necessary functions - so they become key focus points of the body, the most important parts of us, physically. So it would probably be a good idea to get them in proportion with each other, and keep these key focal points looking the way they should.
Most of the rest of the figure looks okay, although another point I'd like to add is that you don't seem to have added any hint of bone structure and muscle beneath the fur and skin. If you examine your own body, or study photos, you'll notice that some parts of the body have bone and muscle that show through the skin - particularly the knees, elbows, ankles, shoulders, neck and the hands. I don't see any on Rosa, and while you could excuse this by saying her fur covers it, well look XD [link] even though this fine creature has long fur, the shape of his bones still show [I chose an ape btw because its the most human-like furry creature IRL, physically, so is probably a good reference when thinking about anthros!]
Adding bone and muscle definition would help to make her body look not only more realistic, but also more natural and easier for the viewer to relate to. Without bones she seems a little featureless or artificial [she doen't look particularly artificial, but such things can send subconcious messages to people to produce that impression]
It might be a good idea to study some photos of real people, and pictures of skeletons, to get a good idea of how the structure of the body actually works.
Another thing I would like to add is that the colours you've selected are very nice, and the subtle, minimal shading is good and easy on the eye... however, you've given her hair a lovely texture so that it looks like more realistic, textured, touchable hair... why not do the same with her body? If the hair on her head is textured then the fur on her body probably ought to be too, perhaps you could try experimenting with some fur textures? Try looking at some real animals - I looked up kaibab squirrel on google and found this [link] notice how the fur is short in some areas and long in others? I think perhaps the tail at least should be textured, and perhaps the fur around the chest and arms and inside the ears, although its up to you really which features you take from the real animal and which you leave behind when creating an anthro character. Again, this is just some suggestions to think about.
hat I DO like about this picture is the shape of the ears, they look really cute and the tufts give a little more personality and individuality to the character. The tufts look similar enough to the tufts of the real squirrel that they appear to be true to life, yet just different enough to be a feature of your own art and style - again giving that essence of individuality. The eyes are very pretty, they're big and cute, with enough suggestion of eyeliner and eyelash to make her look feminine, yet not so much that she looks overthetop. I also notice you took my advice about the shading/highlights in the eye, thats cool, and it looks a lot nicer than before, I think! The eyes look more like realistic eyes, whilst still retaining the cartoony look, so the sharper highlights work really well. You might also consider adding a little subtle, sharp shading to the top of the iris and eye white where her eyelid casts a small shadow over the eye, to give even more depth - although its up to you really, depends on what you intend for the picture and how much depth you want to give the image.
Lastly I'm not sure if I like the leaves very much. Am I right in guessing you used the photoshop brush for them? It looks as though you did, and to someone like me who is familiar with photoshop, I can pick up on it instantly and it send out the message "laaaazy" XD I used to use photoshop brushes for my backgrounds and stuff a lot and they -can- work well sometimes, but its easy to become reliant on them or to start using them all the time, even when its unneccesary, which can kind of spoil your work. I can't see the significance of the leaves for this picture - yes she's a squirrel, but the leaves don't seem to have much to do with her... unless there is some secret reason for them being that that you haven't explained? :\
Often, a plain background can look better as its easy for a background to become overly detailed and detract from the character. In this picture, you have orange, yellow, green red and white in the background and it does become a little overbearing, as the colours of the leaves on the white actually have more contrast and variation than in the character. A more subtle background would probably work better [unless your intention was to have her disappearing into the leaves] and the fact that some of the leaves are floating in FRONT of her body is also a little distracting.
I know I've been critical here and pointed out a LOT of errors, but I really do think this looks very nice, and you've improved a lot since I first encountered your art. The picture is very tidy and it looks as though you put quite a lot of time and effort in [here's a suggestion, perhaps when mentioning the programs you used in the description, you could also add the time roughly taken? then I wouldn't be guessing!], the character looks very sweet and pretty, and is appealing. I really like the face, it looks very very pretty. Hopefully you'll find my crits helpful! <3
About the leaves brush... it's kinda got to do with her personality. Might try to make my own leaves brush though, 'cause I like falling leaves. I also might try something else that has to do with Rosa's personality and abilities. She's sort of a nature girl and a nerd, and her whole colour scheme is fall colours, while Conejo's is more sky and sea, and sable's is kinda spacey, weird, very loud and colourful. I was thinking of making my own brush, one with acorns, though I think in her case, pinecones and needles would be more appropriate. Might try that next time
As for the head, I'm still having trouble with proportions, same with the legs, and the hands. I still have HORRIBLE trouble drawing hands and getting them just right, and I mess up several times before I'm even a little satisfied. And I have small hands, practically Barbie-sized, so I guess her hands are a bit of an exaggeration.
The wide hips and thin waist I think were partly inspired by Barbie, and by Aeon Flux(I saw some clips of it in an Animatrix featurette, and then I visited a fansite with some cool pictures). I also am trying to figure out how to make the limbs look more realistic-ish with the bones protruding in some areas, like the collarbone. Might need to look at a few photos of real animals and people on google, because I'm thinking of drawing humans, which I'm not that good at drawing in Illustrator or Photoshop. *bookmarks the pictures you showed me* ^^
I'm gonna have to check out some more tutorials, or look in the mirror more often(too bad the mirror in my room broke 'cause I slammed it ) because I want to improve.
Anyways, thank you for the advice, it gave me lots to think about ^^

This is really good, I like the colors and the line art is perfect, and smooth. The color too, is good on the eyes. As for the anatomy- it's your drawing style and I think it makes it look more animalistic and unique. Good job!

Actually, I'm always looking for ways to improve, so getting advice on anatomy and stuff is always good. And the rules of art can always be broken, I'm just searching for ways to improve my style and get my characters to look better. In Rosa's case, I might have to give her a pure white tail in the future, or just make her a kaibab/abert hybrid.
Anyways if you want to get some advice for improvement on your art, ask Teh-Cha or someone else who is really experienced in art and critiques. It can be very valuable ^^
